What is Distressed Wood Flooring?
Distressed wood flooring is created when a technique called ‘distressing’ is applied onto a standard wood floor, employed to give the look of an aged or old item. Distressing can also be applied to fabrics or clothes, but we will discuss it in detail on wood flooring. Promising a look of age, rustic character, and heritage, this is a perfect floor for an antique-style room that has stood the test of time. It’s important to note that distressed wood flooring is not actually old or aged, it is just constructed to look that way. You get all of the benefits of a brand new, functional floor with the character of an old floor. The distressed look works well in rustic, traditional, or contemporary interiors. A diverse, versatile floor which is popular for its distinct characteristics.
How is Distressed Wood Flooring Made?
Distressing a wood floor can be done a few different ways. Here at Timba Floors & Boards, our distressed wood floors are handcrafted. Meaning that the floors are manually damaged using a range of tools like chains or scrapers to create scratches and other wear and tear effects to make the floor look like it has had its fair share of foot traffic. We believe handcrafting brings that extra value, knowing your floor was carefully created by a dedicated craftsman.
Machines can also be used to distress a wood floor, which involves a variety of heavy tools to create the similar rustic effects that hand crafting them creates. Techniques like wire brushing or tumbling fall into this category. Wire brushing involves using a rotary wire brush to yank the soft grains from each board to leave the harder ones in place. With the added texture this brings, a wire brushed floor would be ideal in a room bound to get scratched up anyway, this could be from pets or children. Tumbling involves putting the boards in a large machine to tumble, where the boards will crash against each other and other sharp objects to create a random string of damage for authenticity.
Distressed wood floors are engineered real wood and are an excellent choice for any home, old or brand new. Our Distressed wood flooring, as part of our River Crack Old Town Range, comes in different colours like dark oak, light, and everything in between to match a range of interior design styles.
